A Day In The Life of Me....

Its been a long time since I have made a blog entry. Sheesh. Well...on April 30, 2010. I found out that I was pregnant with our 2nd child. It came as a surprise since it took us months to conceive our first child. Nonetheless, we are very happy to have conceived as quick as we did.

We aren't sure of the sex of the baby yet but hope to find out soon. I am 17 weeks as of today. :o) The first trimester was a bit tough w/fatigue and nausea but it has gotten a lot better since.

My weight loss has stopped and I have only gained 2 lbs since getting pregnant. I have consistently taken my prenatal and calcium pills daily...and get as much h20 and protein as possible!

So far so good!

One year later...my life has changed so much. I have lost officially, 67 lbs since March 23, 2009. I used to be a size 22, now I am a size 10/12. My measurements have changed over time but I still have some problem areas. ;o)

I am so grateful that I no longer have Type 2 Diabetes. My blood pressure has also been getting better. My meds have been lowered but I eventually want to get off them completely as well.

We also got the all-clear to try to conceive. Of course, I will be 40 years old next month so I know that it will be an uphill battle to try to conceive but we will leave it in the hands of the Lord.

Well...I went for my 1 year post-op appointment and I was thrilled with the news. My official weight is 142. My BMI a year ago was about 39. Now it is about 25. I am so grateful for the surgery and how it has changed my life for the better.

We also go the green light to start trying to conceive! YAY! As long as I keep doing what I am doing, I will do fine. So excited for all of the positives that the Lord has put in my life.

I also got a call for a part-time temp HR position as well as got my acceptance letter to attend Texas A&M San Antonio for my Masters Degree! YAY!

Lab Results

Well, I got a letter from my gastric bypass surgeon's office yesterday. Seems that my Iron is low (should be 40 but mine was 21). My vitamin D is also low. He also wants me to see my doc about a possible low thyroid. :o(

I just filled the prescriptions that the doc mailed to me (Iron and Vitamin D)...ouch...it was $50.

I am a little bummed but I will bounce back and do what I need to. I know that the Iced Coffees I drink have caffeine so I will need to change to decaf to help with this problem.

Grocery Shopping Tips

All of us, bariatric or not, could benefit from smarter, healthier eating. It is important to surround yourself with resources and opportunities that give you a sense of control and mastery over your food choices and eating habits. When you are trying to adhere to a healthy diet, a simple trip to the supermarket can feel like navigating through a minefield. If you are prepared, each trip to the store will be easier and more fun than the last. Arm yourself with these simple tips and a thorough list, and you can have a cart full of good-for-you foods in no time flat.

Never shop hungry. Hunger makes you more susceptible to impulse buys and foods that you don't need. Not to mention, when your blood sugar is low, you will instinctively reach for high sugar, empty calorie foods that will give you a quick rise in blood sugar, but you will crash quickly after eating and be ravenous again. Always have a healthy, satisfying meal or snack before heading to the grocery store. Something high in protein and healthy carbs is best, try greek yogurt or PB with celery sticks.

Plan Ahead. Make a list and stick to it! This way you will buy what you need and use what you have. Check store ads in your mail or online to find the best deals on healthy food.

Shop from the outside in. Grocery stores usually place the healthiest foods, such as fresh produce, dairy, and fresh meats and seafood, in the outside perimeter of the store. The best strategy is to shop the outside aisles and back of the store first before heading to the middle aisles, where most of the processed foods are found. Keep in mind, the middle aisles also contain some wholesome foods, i.e. canned vegetables, nuts, beans, and soy products. The key is to be a savvy shopper and make the best selections for your ongoing weight loss success. Weight loss surgery patients can accommodate the needs of themselves, as well as their families, everyone will benefit from wholesome food choices that are tasty, simple, and require little effort.

Fresh is best. Whether you are choosing meat, seafood, dairy or produce, look for the freshest items (in the case of packaged foods, check the expiration dates). To make your produce last longer, don't just choose the ones that are ready to use, mix in some under ripe fruits and veggies, and let them ripen at home. I actually prefer frozen vegetables. Not only will they last longer, they tend to be more nutritious than fresh oftentimes as they are frozen at peak ripeness when they will contain the most vitamins and minerals.

Choose whole grains. When shopping for non-weight loss family members, choose whole grain pastas, breads, cereals, and rice with a high fiber content (at least 4 grams per serving). Avoid white rice, white bread, white pasta, sugary cereals, and anything else made with refined flour versus whole grain flour.

Read nutrition labels carefully. A food may advertise that it is 100 calories per serving, but the package may contain 10 servings. Low-fat foods sometimes contain high amounts of sugar, salt or calories, making them just as unhealthy as their higher-fat version. Always compare the nutritional information to the "light" version with the regular version, to see if there might be a catch! A good general rule of thumb is to look for foods with the fewest ingredients, and little to no artificial ingredients or preservatives.

Some easy and healthy, creative snacks to have on hand at home and work:

· Sugar-free jello with fat-free whipped topping
· Celery/carrots/peppers with a chickpea/hummus dip
· Sugar free popsycles
· Berries
· Part-Skim string cheese
· Edamame
· Peeled cucumber slices with fat-free greek yogurt/low-fat cheese

Weekly food shopping should be challenging and interesting when looking for flavorful foods to add to your own list of favorite bariatric foods. Specialty stores, organic markets, and farmers markets will get you out of your same old grocery shopping routine and can help inspire you to try new foods and recipes. Menu planning is key to maintaining interest and enjoyment in your long-term post-operative bariatric experience. Go explore your grocery store and specialty markets with a new eye toward creativity. Get creative and you will find new recipes and snacks that will help rekindle your motivation and commitment to your bariatric lifestyle!

Ugg...had a root canal this morning...it was more like an emergency root canal. Seems that my quest for a better smile has caused me a few problems and has hit a few snags. On top of the root canal, which was not bad at all, I started getting a migraine before the procedure...as of right now, I still have it. No amount of medication is seeming to work on this pesky booger of a migraine.

I did have a few things I needed to do...like go and see my Avon rep, take Valentino to the vet and a few other things. We shall see what happens.

Tomorrow will be just as busy...no time for a migraine. :o(

Week 3...yay

Tomorrow is the start of Week 3 of my new life. It will be a busy week as well. I go to the dentist tomorrow for my wax impression for my new crowns...so glad that after 28 years, I am finally getting them replaced.

We are going to see Casting Crowns on Thursday! I am so excited about seeing them again. I love them so much. Friday is the PTA Carnival at my son's school. Saturday I am going to a Scentsy party too!

Watching "Saving Private Ryan" on TNT right now. What an incredible movie.

The Key to Losing Weight and keeping it off-FIBER!!

Fiber has become the latest nutrition buzz word because besides its numerous health benefits, such as reducing the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer, diets high in fiber can help you lose weight without hunger. In a recent study, women who doubled their fiber intake from 12 to 24 grams per day, cut their calorie absorption by 90 calories a day. That's a 9.4 pound weight loss in a year!

Fiber is the indigestible part of a carbohydrate. This means it can't be broken down and therefore adds zero calories to your diet. So how does fiber, which has no nutritional value and simply goes in and comes out, work its magic? Fiber acts like a sponge in your digestive tract, absorbing other molecules like carbs, fats and sugar, along with their calories and prevents them from settling on your hips. Additionally, fiber contributes bulk to foods, which gives you the satisfaction of chewing while giving you the feeling of a full stomach. What a bonus! Weight loss without feeling hungry or deprived. Fiber provides many other benefits as well, including improved energy, clearer skin, and shiny hair.

Without fiber, you simply are hungrier than you need to be, leading to between meal snacking, and overeating at meals. Most Americans eat less than half the recommended daily intake of 25-38 grams of fiber per day, which is one of the many reasons our country as a whole is overweight.

Companies worldwide are adding fiber to all kinds of products from crackers to yogurts to drinks. In fact, Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter reports that packaged food touting fiber claims are one of the fastest growing categories of grocery products in the U.S. With all the new high-fiber items in the marketplace, it's easier than ever to add fiber rich foods to your diet.

Here are a few suggestions for sneaking fiber foods into your diet anywhere:

At Breakfast

Spice up your eggs

One-third of a cup of chopped onion and one clove garlic will add 1 g of fiber to scrambled eggs. Or fold the eggs omelet-style over 1/2 cup of cooked broccoli for an additional 2 g fiber.

Sprinkle ground flaxseed into your favorite protein drink, or stir a few spoonfuls into a cup of yogurt. Two tablespoons equals close to an extra 2 grams of fiber.

Drop a whole orange into the blender to flavor your morning protein drink. One peeled orange has nearly 3 grams more fiber than even the pulpiest orange juice (and a lot less sugar and calories).

Whip up a pack of sugar free hot-chocolate mix instead of that second cup of coffee. Most instant cocoa mixes have as much as 3 grams of fiber per cup.

At Lunch

Have beans for your mid-day protein instead of meat. Half a cup of beans adds 6 grams of fiber to your meal.

Stow some microwavable soup in your desk for when you need to work through lunch. Lentil, chili with beans, ham and bean, and black bean each have between 6-10 grams of fiber per cup.

Use oregano or basil in dishes. A teaspoon of either spice adds 1 gram of fiber, add mushrooms also and you'll add 1 gram more.

Add sauerkraut to your hot dog. Every ¼ cup you pile on adds close to 1 gram of fiber to your frank.

Have a low-sodium V8 and its 2 grams of fiber. The v8 that comes spiked with salt has half that amount.

At Dinner

Add some green to your red sauce. Doctor your favorite jarred pasta sauce with ½ cup of frozen chopped spinach. The spinach will take on the flavor of the sauce and pad your fiber count by more than 2 g.

Cook broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, and you'll take in 3 to 5 grams of fiber per serving, as much as twice what you'll get if you eat them raw (heat makes fiber more available).

Use cooked oatmeal instead of breadcrumbs in your next meatloaf. Add ¾ cup of oats per pound of ground meat, and you'll boost the total fiber count by more than 8 grams.

Toss ½ cup chickpeas into a pot of your favorite soup. They'll absorb the flavor of the soup and tack 6 grams of fiber onto your bottom line.

At Dessert

Say nuts to protein bars. Bars with almonds have about 2 grams of fiber-almost twice the fiber content of bars without.

Have a bowl of sliced fresh berries. One-half cup of raspberries provides 4 grams of fiber; strawberries and blueberries pack 2 grams.

Introduce your pie hole to a slice of apple, cherry, or berry pie. Of course make sugar-free desserts, but try to choose fruit flavored pies and you'll add an extra 3 to 5 grams of fiber. Cakes and cookies will have almost none.

Well, can't believe that it is already March 1st! I am on my 2nd week of being a SAHM! I am loving it. I do quite a bit of things throughout the day. I did get a chance to visit my best friend, Theresa. Prayers are working for her mom thankfully and she is doing better.

I am working the Elections tomorrow so it will be a long day. I had forgot about it and had made some plans to do other things...had to call and cancel them.

Also went to Wal-mart his morning and got me a nice workout shirt! I guess I will do the Active Sports Wii on Wednesday. I also need to get back to the track on Wednesday as well. I am finally losing weight. :o)

Wow...one week and it has flown by. I really am enjoying this time off and getting really involved in so many things. I love my To Do Lists!

Need to go to Target and get my medications filled (90 day supplies...yay)
Pick up little one (early release) at 12:15
Pick up my paycheck at work (even if it will be tiny)
Drop off little man at grandparents
Go to Square Foot Gardening Class at the Food Bank

Today is Day 4 of my new life as a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom for those who aren't sure what that stands for). I will be doing my 2nd day of volunteering at my son's school. I am excited again since I know what to expect today. I will make sure that I have my protein shake w/Click...as well as my bottled water, vitamins and homemade sugar-free vanilla iced coffee. :o)

Looked into my health insurance coverage and a friend from Twitter told me that according to Texas Senate Bill 51, I am covered till the end of the month. YAY! So, I will be using my insurance this afternoon when I go see my PCP. I like to get 90 day supplies of my medications all of the time...just easier for me. :o)

Foods That Fight Fat

Couldn't we all use some more tricks to help us combat fat? Believe it or not, there are certain foods that if you eat more of can help you lose weight and stay slim. Below are examples of a few that help you to do just that.

Cottage Cheese: This has whey protein, which releases hormones that tell your brain when you have had enough to eat. Non-fat cottage cheese with pineapple tidbits or strawberries is actually my favorite filling, grab and go breakfast.

Egg Whites: The amino acids in egg whites help build lean muscle that in turn helps to rev up metabolism. Start having an omelet with veggies and low-fat cheese for breakfast or dinner.

Almonds: These are high in alpha-linolenic acid. A study in the International Journal of Obesity found that alpha-linolenic acid speeds up metabolism. Add a handful to your salads or eat as an afternoon snack.

Low-Fat String Cheese: Calcium-rich foods reduce fat-producing enzymes and increase fat breakdown. At only around 80 calories per stick, you get calcium and appetite suppressing protein.

Edamame: This is an excellent source of protein and filling fiber, both of which will help you to eat less and lose weight. Buy them in the pod and shell them for a snack or add it to a salad.

Mustard: The spice that gives mustard its yellow color is called turmeric. A Study in the journal of Endocrinology found that turmeric may slow the growth of fat tissues. Lesson of the day here is use mustard not mayo!

Cinnamon: It is believed that using cinnamon daily (about ¼ teaspoon) on your food will prevent a post meal insulin spike. The spike in insulin that normally occurs after you eat signals the body to store fat rather than burn it.

Herbal Tea: Tea is a wonderful substitute when you are craving something sugary and hot tea can soothe stress, which will help prevent overeating. I love to put cinnamon in a vanilla tea I use and get double the weight loss whammy!

Hummus: This is a good source of protein as well as healthy fat, both of which increase satiety and prevent you from overeating or getting hungry quickly. I love to eat this with raw veggies; a great alternative to the usual empty calorie chips and dip.

Energy Bars: Energy bars are a great substitute when you are craving a candy bar type treat. They will provide you with half the calories and fat of a candy bar, plus you will get filling, appetite suppressing, and metabolism boosting protein. My favorites are the Healthwise protein bars we have here at the office because they come in a large variety of flavors and they are really delicious!

Well, today is Day 3 of my new life as a SAHM. I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying it. I ended up leaving a job that I loved to do new things and have time to spend with my 4-year-old son.

I have so many goals this year.

Get a better paying job. Well, that didn't happen.
Work on my Masters. Currently, I hope to become a graduate student at Texas A&M San Antonio and will probably work on an MBA.
Have another baby. I will be one year post-op from my Gastric Bypass Surgery on March 23, 2010. After that, we plan to try. :o)

Those are just a few goals I have on the front burner. I am sure that I will eventually get a new job or hopefully, start my own business. I will be 40 in April and I figured it was time to take a risk and live life to the fullest and do what makes me happy.
